WHAT IS FUNGAL NAIL INFECTION

Fungal nail infections (medically known as onychomycosis) are common affecting 29% of the population. Although not serious it can be unsightly, unpleasent and difficult to treat.

Toenails are more frequently affected than finger nails.

The infection starts insidiously and may not be noticed in the early stages. However as it progresses the infection causes :-

  • Discolouration of the nail - it may turnwhite, yellow, black or green.
  • Thickening or distortion of the nail - it may become an unusual shape or texture and be difficult to trim.
  • Pain or discomfort - particularly when using or placing pressure on the affected nail.
  • Brittle or crumbly - pieces may break off and come awy completely.

Sometimes the skin around the nail also becomes infected and may be itchy, cracked, red or swollen.

Most fungal nail infections occur as a result of the fungi that causes athlete's foot infecting the nail. In advanced cases the nail bed and the matrix will also become infected. Trauma to the nail can also result in fungus entering the nail plate.
